Prepare to be amazed – part 1 (Zorro)

I estimate he knew about 30 English words. He somehow always understood when he needed to pose for a camera. He maintained absolute authority over any dogs nearby regardless of size. I witnessed him herding cattle and chasing chickens. He never backed down from a cat. He caught several birds (I have no idea). He would corner snakes and trap mice. He always needed to pee and poop in front of my mower while I was mowing. He needed to mark his territory about every 5 feet when we walked. He never cared for fetch. In reality, he was ‘above’ fetch. He was stub-born – it took about a year to get him fully potty trained. He lived (and stored pee) for walks. He loved to hang with people and dogs. His arch nemesis was the Dyson Animal vacuum, and later, any remote control device that moved under it’s own power. These things were deathly serious. He established the animal hierarchy in our home and maintained a control over Dutch that we will never understand. He slept where he wanted, ate first and maintained preferred observation positions on the landing or near the door (ref. the pictures below). He is the only dog I’ve ever met that smiled by showing a full row of teeth. Or maybe it was a beg face? He was sweet when he wanted and fierce when he needed to be. In his prime, his bark could be heard several houses away and scared the unprepared nearby. He was referred to as ‘the captain’ or ‘boss dog’. He never stopped licking the floor regardless of how well you cleaned a spot. He loved to sit on the front porch or back stoop and look on. He was so chill. He was even a chill puppy, if that’s possible. He never missed a bed time. When it was 10 pm, he would quietly leave the room and put himself to bed. He lived by the ‘eat first, ask questions later’ mantra. He loved to “help” me with my projects by just hanging out. He taught Danelle to love dogs. And, his bags were always packed. He loved to just go – it didn’t even matter where. If a travel bag moved, he watched every subsequent move closely – and circled the car until someone put him in.

Zorro battled cancer for a few months before it finally proved too much for him. He passed away on March 29, 2024. He was nearly 10.5 years old. He was the sweetest, best companion animal one could ask for. And he left so many memories – a doggy lifetime – for us to cherish for years to come.

We love you and miss you, Captain!

Before & After: Guest Bedroom

This room has been mostly complete for a while now, as our guests can attest to, but I just hadn’t put it on site. I toss around ideas for those extra homey items to add but just haven’t found those “this is it” items. Although as I walk by this room daily, I’ve decided that I shouldn’t put off sharing. With its own bathroom, which needs a couple more renovations, it’s a space I hope others find welcoming.

Chip chip rrrrhhhuuummm

I went ahead and did it. I bought that wood chipper. So. Many. Branches. Have. I. Cut. And the cuts keep coming as the trees keep growing. I can chip up to 3 inch diameter and lots of brush. I anticipate good usage – especially when cleaning up the back for our new fence. (Did I give something away just now?)

My new “grown up car”

I’ve always been a car nut. And I’ve owned some interesting stuff. But not terribly long before Danelle and I started dating, I settled in to more reliable and comfortable automobiles. To be sure, they were never boring or run-of-the-mill, but one could not deny the reliability, efficiency and practicality.

Fast forward some years and the itch was back. Danelle’s Mini Cooper S was the fastest car we owned. I wanted impractical and ridiculous again. What I really needed was a daily that was a drivers car and practical and not old enough to buy cigarettes. I had pretty much made up my mind, but as is common for me, the whole process took almost two years. I talked her into it, then I found it. One flight to Cleveland later. Say hellur.

Yes, it goes like stink. And it’s an SUV. And a Porsche. #porschelifer

Before & After : Half Bath

It took some time but our half bath is complete (mostly). We had replaced the light, curtain, mirror and faucet first. Then after much consideration, Ryan made a countertop from butcher block and found a copper sink, which he wanted something unique. I had the idea to hang wallpaper for a focal point! Yep, I didn’t think I’d be one to want to hang wallpaper but I found peel-and-stick and figured how hard can it be?! With some help from Ryan, we were able to get it stuck to the wall and trimmed. Overall, it came out really well. We do still want to repaint the vanity to fix some imperfections so that is to come yet.

Our 6th Year: Exploring The Area

After a big 5th year anniversary trip to Hawaii, for our 6th we decided to take a long weekend to explore some of our local area. Weston, MO, was our destination for the day, after a stop at an unique local coffee shop in Leavenworth, KS and a quick stop at the Weston Bend State Park for a short hike. Weston was once a port along the Missouri River where steamboats docked but a flood in the 1880s shifted the river south, slowing the population growth of the town. While in Weston we walked the historical main street of shops, ate at a local pizza shop, learned the history of the town, and even did a wine tasting in an old church.

The rest of the weekend we revisited some of our usual stops during late September – early October. After a day of traveling north, we then headed south to Louisburg-taking in the Cider Mill, where eating apple cider donuts and have a glass of cider is a must. Picking our own pumpkins from the field was on the way home. We always tend to get more than we planned but our home definitely looks like fall.

We ended the weekend with a walk with the dogs at the Edgerton Park and an afternoon at a Sporting KC soccer game. The Chinese takeout to conclude the evening was just what we needed. We did have a nicer meal out the next weekend-Lidia’s in the Freight House District. On to year 7 and the adventures to come.

The Good Life (not in NE)

My grandparents have been been married a long time. And they have been taking the whole family on a vacation every 5 years once they hit 50 years. This is the third family vacation (you do the math) and, arguably, the most extravagant to date. They rented a giant house and the whole family (all 25!) of us stayed on the Lake of the Ozarks for 5 days and nights. The house included an incredible dock and they also rented a bowrider for our boating, skiing and tubing delights. We made our meals, swam, ate, swam, ate, drank and generally enjoyed each other’s company. Soooo relaxing!! And with such great people! In such a great environment. The weather was perfect! We had so much fun. We should do this every year. Seriously. I mean. Seriously.

BAM plants!

It finally stopped raining and warmed up and it shows! I’m turning into a gardening nerd. Seriously though, it’s fun to watch the landscape develop given what we started with.

NWA

D and I took a trip to Northwest Arkansas this spring. Whoa heat!

All said it was a great time. We scoped out Bentonville, all things Wal-Mart (reluctantly but we recognize it’s influence on the area and world), stayed in a VRBO house in the woods on a hill, hiked, visited museums, explored caverns and an old mill, visited Eureka Springs, walked thru a glass chapel, saw giant carp at Beaver Lake, antiqued like Jenny Mars, saw Jenny Mars, and found a ‘hole in the wall’ bakery that made THE BEST ARTISAN COFFEE (which came quart size only).

I maintain. We vacation embarrassly well.

Only one bad happened. We brought the dogs figuring they would enjoy the trip and the house was accommodating (really worked well) but Dutch didn’t appreciate the hills and curves and developed severe traveling anxiety. To be fair, I was also nearly dizzy a couple times.

A Pop of Color: Guest Bath

Although still a work in progress, I’ll share our guest bathroom pop of color: the vanity-painted in Olive Grove. The color pairs well with the brushed gold knobs, faucet/shower fixtures and new light. The huge mirror needed something (and we didn’t feel like replacing it) so Ryan made a frame for it to add some farmhouse/rustic feel. We’ll make changes to the shower door and flooring yet but figured I’d share what we’ve done so far.
